Now: Owner, Go Go Green Garden
Then: Bakery worker
Current position: I plant edible gardens for people in their back or front yard, and teach them to grow and cook their own food using organic and heirloom seeds.
First job: My first job was in a local Jewish bakery in Long Island, where I grew up. I was 15 at the time, so I worked off the books and got paid cash under the table because I was so young. I ate cake and doughnuts nearly every day, and it was my first introduction to rugelach, babka and bialys. Bialys are still one of my favorite things to eat.
How I got the job: My sister worked there, and they needed more help. I basically spent my youth doing what my sister did for work. She had a paper route, so I got a paper route. She worked in the bakery, so I worked in the bakery. We would be scheduled for the same shift so my mom didn't have to drive twice to pick us up or drop us off.
What I learned: I learned that a clean kitchen is a good kitchen. I learned how to fill a doughnut with a fancy machine. I learned how to relate to our customers and smile big. I learned about the power of a well-made bagel.
