Businesses strive to improve customer service with counter and rental clerks

Outlook: Employment of counter and rental clerks is expected to increase by 23 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. As businesses strive to improve customer service, growth is expected in most industries, particularly in amusement and recreation.

Pay: The 10,340 counter and rental clerks in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $26,070 in 2008.

The job: Counter and rental clerks take orders for rentals and services and must be knowledgeable about the company’s goods, policies and procedures. They also give advice on products and services.

Training/licensing: Most counter and rental clerk jobs are entry-level positions that require little or no experience and minimal formal education.
