The job: Correctional officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a jail, reformatory or penitentiary.
Training/licensing: Correctional officers learn most of what they need to know for their work through on-the-job training. Qualifications vary by agency, but all require at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
