Pay: The 6,300 hairdressers in the Seattle-Tacoma- Bellevue area in 2007 earned a median $13.02 an hour, or $27,090 a year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. However, these numbers do not include the 46 percent who are self-employed, either by owning their own shop or leasing a chair in a salon.
The job: Hairdressers offer a wide range of services, such as hair shampooing, cutting, coloring and styling.
Demand: It's expected to grow by 14 percent from 2006 to 2016, faster than average.
Training, licensing: Hairdressers must complete training at a state-licensed school or through a state-approved apprentice- ship, and then pass written and practical state licensing exams.
