Pay: The 710 home-appliance repairers in the Seattle-Bellevue Tacoma area in 2007 earned a median wage of $18.09 an hour or $37,630 a year, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The job: Home-appliance repairers do both installation and repair. Some work on small items such as microwave ovens and vacuum cleaners. Others specialize in items such as refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers, and window air-conditioning units. Those who work with major appliances will drive to and from appointments and emergency calls.
Demand: Very good job opportunities are expected, with openings continuing to outnumber job seekers.
Training: Most entry-level workers learn on the job, although employers prefer those who have completed programs in electronics or appliance repair offered in technical schools or community colleges.
