Pay: The 540 surveyors working in the Seattle-Tacoma- Bellevue area in 2007 made a median wage of $32.81 an hour or $68,250 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of them made between $57,220 and $78,830.
The job: Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems are referred to as HVACR systems. Technicians often specialize in either installation or maintenance and repair, although they are trained to do both.
Pay: The 2,680 HVACR mechanics and installers working in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area in 2007 earned a median wage of $26.26 an hour or $54,620 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $40,700 and $64,640.
Demand: Employment opportunities should be excellent.
Training: Those with technical-school training or a formal apprenticeship are preferred.
Licensing: This state does not yet license HVACR technicians but does require licensing for the electrical components of the work.
