Outlook: Employment of hydrologists is expected to increase 24 percent over the 2006-16 decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 210 hydrologists in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $83,200 in 2008.
The job: Using sophisticated techniques and instruments, hydrologists study the quantity, distribution, circulation and physical properties of bodies of water. Often, they specialize in either underground water or surface water.
Training/licensing: A master’s degree in hydrology or a related natural science is the minimum educational requirement for most entry-level positions in private industry, state and federal agencies and state geological surveys.
