Landscape architects plot our urban environment's functional, decorative details

Outlook: Employment of landscape architects is expected to increase 16 percent over the 2006-16 decade, which is faster than the average for all occupations.

Pay: The 880 landscape architects in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $62,640 in 2008.

The job: Working with architects, surveyors and engineers, landscape architects help determine the best arrangement of roads and buildings. They create detailed plans indicating topography, vegetation, walkways and other landscaping details, such as fountains and decorative features.

Training/licensing: Most states require landscape architects to be licensed. Other requirements vary among states; they usually include a degree in landscape architecture from an accredited school, work experience and the passage of the Landscape Architect Registration Exam.
