Light-truck driver

Pay: The median pay for this job in the Seattle area is $34,651, with most ranging from $29,725 to $39,578, according to salary.com.

Demand: Employment of truck drivers is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations. Because it is such a large occupation, truck drivers will have a large number of new jobs arise, more than 258,000 over the 2006-16 period. In addition, numerous job openings will occur as experienced drivers leave this occupation for other fields of work or retirement.

Need to know: Light- or delivery-services truck drivers operate vans and trucks of less than 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. They pick up or deliver merchandise and packages within a specific area. Light-truck drivers usually load or unload the merchandise at the customer's place of business.

A driver's license is required, and most employers want a clean driving record. Unlike larger trucks, drivers of light trucks are not required to have a commercial driver's license unless they are transporting hazardous materials. Many jobs driving smaller trucks require only brief on-the-job training.
