My First Job: Amy Tucker, co-founder, CE0 and president

Amy Tucker

Current position: Co-founder, CE0 and president, Seattle-based Matter Group, creator of the Xeko adventure game.

First job: Driving the range car and collecting golf balls at the Foothills Golf Course in Denver when I was 16. I drove an old tractor rigged with a ball collector and a cage welded on for protection. Crack ... whiz ... ping! Everyone aims for the range car. I also had to run the balls through a washer — a very wet and mucky job. After a while I got used to balls whizzing at me, although the presence of a shooting range next to the driving range was always unsettling.

What I learned: As I learned and everyone knows, a lot of business deals are made on the golf course. Really, a lot of business happens outside of the office in general and you need to be open to opportunities everywhere. Going from the high-tech industry to launching a company to inspiring the next generation of eco-leaders requires serious networking and acting on the connections you make wherever you are. I meet the most remarkable people in the most unexpected places. And, at the end of the day, it's nice to know I can navigate a course and sink a ball while I'm at it!
