Current position: Project manager and green building specialist with King County Solid Waste Division's GreenTools program. The GreenTools program promotes buildings that are healthy, energy and water-efficient places to live and work in King County.
First job: Farrell's first job was cleaning a fruit-packing facility in Southern Oregon, where he grew up. He started at age 15 working after school in 1981. His duties included cleaning the packing machinery, sweeping the floor, and working in the cold-storage area preparing fruit for shipment at Meyer Orchards in Talent, Ore
What I learned: The orchard owner had high standards for his business, but always treated his employees well. I learned that although the work was hard, hot and uncomfortable (fuzz from the peaches would get under my clothes and itch) that it's always important to do good work and have fun. More importantly, I learned that treating people with respect is the best way to motivate them and inspire teamwork.
