Darcey Howard

Now: Company founder

Then: Lifeguard

Current position: Chief style officer and founder of Seattle-based LifeStyled, a personal style consulting company

First job: At age 14, I honed my skills at the Splashdown Pool at a waterslide in Galveston, Texas, rescuing small children, swinging my lifeguard whistle around my finger and every 10 minutes reciting over a loudspeaker, "All those with orange (pink, red, yellow, green) armbands please exit to the left of the Splashdown Pool and thank you for riding Jungle Surf Water Slide."

What I learned: I was the youngest employee they'd ever hired so they took a risk on me. It was daunting to be working with so many older, seasoned people, but I learned to be responsible, respectful and believe in myself – and found that if you do, people will respect and believe in you, too.
