My First Job: Jane Porter

Jane Porter

Now: Bellevue-based novelist

Then: Carhop

Current position: Author of "Flirting with Forty" (Warner Trade) and "Odd Mom Out" (5 Spot)

First job: My first job was as an A&W car hop in California during the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of high school. I loved A&W's root beer and teen burgers so the perks were good, but the trays of huge mugs were heavy and weekend nights were busy.

What I learned: Running back and forth among 12 cars in 105-degree weather taught me to value the dollar and the meaning of customer service with a smile. Leap forward 25 years; I still have a strong work ethic.
