Now: Nonprofit exec / personal-finance expert
Then: Sales clerk
Current position: Founder and president of Money Wise Women Educational Services, a nonprofit organization in Silverdale, Kitsap County, that is dedicated to educating and empowering women to achieve financial fitness.
First job: Working as a sales clerk at Mar's Fashion, a small family-owned women's clothing store in Visalia, Calif. I started in 1971 at 16 and worked Friday nights, all day Saturday and during school breaks for three years.
What I learned: My boss, Glenn Mar, taught me the importance of good customer service -- to always have a smile on my face, a cheerful, happy voice and to listen to the customer. I can still hear Glenn telling me, "The customer is always right -- no matter what."
