My First Job: Michael Seifert, vice president sales and marketing

Michael Seifert

Current position: Vice president sales and marketing, GoMobile Advertising, a Kent-based marketing and promotion company.

First job: Dishwasher, Tuk-Inn Restaurant (in Tukwila). I worked after school from 3 p.m.-10 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on the weekends from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The pay was great; I was making $4.25 an hour. I eventually became the "head sanitation engineer" and was responsible for scheduling of all shifts and hiring (it was a 50-cent raise). I also assisted the cooks with lunch and dinner prep. Slicing onions was the most challenging part of the job!

How I got the job: My family and I loved eating at Tuk-Inn at least once a week. They were famous for their huge hot-fudge ice-cream sundaes. One night our favorite waitress, LaRae, was upset because the dishwasher did not show up for his shift and asked me if I wanted a job on the spot. I accepted and the rest is history.

What I learned: The owners created a real family and team environment. People really enjoyed eating there. It was an opportunity to meet exciting and fun people, and I learned to make each customer feel special. Our dishwasher group developed into a real team and took great pride in doing our job well and providing excellent service to customers and co-workers. My first job created a work ethic and values that I use every day of my life.
