Now: CEO
Then: Milkman
Current position: President and CEO of Seattle-based SinglePoint
First job: After my freshman year at the University of Washington, the milkman for my fraternity house was looking for someone to cover his route so he could spend the summer fishing in Alaska. I took over his route.
What I learned: I discovered if I started early, I could get done early. And if I was efficient, I could get done even earlier. This was a great incentive for working hard. Communicating with customers was another lesson. A few times I misunderstood when the customer was going on vacation and was greeted by a milk box of rancid milk that had been out in the sun for a number of days. The value of confirming customers' needs is essential in any type of customer sales or service.
