My First Job: Richard Bray

Richard Bray

Now: Charity executive

Then: Yogurt sales

Current position: Director of Donor & Community Relations -- Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle/King County.

First job: Besides my Seattle paper route, my first real job was at a frozen-yogurt place called Yonny Yonson's Yogurt.

What I learned: Quite a bit about marketing, distributing coupons at my high school. By giving free samples to attract customers to a good product, we developed loyal customers. The job also taught me the value of hard work and to serve customers with friendly and fast service. The applicable lesson of letting potential customers sample your product or service, removing initial hesitation, applies just as much in organizational life today — whether nonprofit or for profit.
