My First Job: Sloan Ritchie

Sloan Ritchie

Now: Company president

Then: Paperboy

Current position: President and founder of Cascade Built

First job: Delivering The Seattle Times.

What I learned: I was my own boss and could decide when I started (mostly) and when I finished (as long as I wasn't late for dinner). I had to please the customer. And, once a month I had to go around asking for money. I learned to skim the headline, while walking from house to house, finding the quickest path to complete delivery. I learned about houses, style, construction, yards and how they all worked together to make a neighborhood. All of these things apply to my career choice today – perhaps it even influenced my decision to become a green developer.
