My First Job: Takumi Ono

Takumi Ono

Now: President, Junglecity Network

Then: Salesperson at a boutique in my hometown, Kobe, Japan

Current position: I started the business after working a few years in the bicycle industry. Our key product is Junglecity.com, the largest Japanese Web site for the Northwest, launched in 1998. We provide Web design, media coordination and events.

First job: I applied to work at a Kobe boutique to earn money before coming to Seattle for college. I had no experience in the apparel industry, so there was no promise of me bringing any income for the business owners. However, they showed interest in supporting my plan of studying in Seattle and hired me and taught me the basics of selling clothes.

What I learned: I probably didn't pull in much more income for them than the salary they paid me, but I learned to do my best at all times. I also learned that especially in a small business, business owners need to build a tight-knit team with a set goal; and not to keep a distance from the employees just because I am the boss.
