Then: pot washer, hotel
Current position: Senior project manager, United Professional Caulking & Restoration, Seattle
First job: At 15, I worked at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas as a pot washer for $2.25 per hour. At 16, I was promoted to serve an apprenticeship for a European chef, making French pastries, breads and Danishes for buffets and restaurants. He was a tyrant and not easy to get along with, but I persisted and learned to be committed and patient in all that I do.
In March 1991, having gained experience and earning a good reputation in the construction trades, I was offered to contract my first project as an independent contractor.
What I learned: I learned that if you want to build a business, you need to be committed and patient. I now have the opportunity to work on high-rise buildings all over Washington state, working with contractors, property management and consultants. My commitment and patience have allowed me to pass on my experiences and make a lasting impression.
Now, my making French pastries and decorating wedding cakes is only for friends and family.
