Transit bus drivers

Pay: Transit and intercity bus drivers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median $20.17 an hour or $41,950 a year in May 2007, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The job: Bus drivers operate a range of vehicles from 15-passenger buses to 60-foot articulated ones that can carry more than 100 passengers.

Need to know: Drivers often work nights, weekends and holidays. Senior drivers may have regular schedules, but others do not. Nationwide, about 30 percent work part-time.

Demand: Employment growth is projected to be 13 percent over the 2006-16 decade, about as fast as average.

Training: Drivers need a good driving record and a commercial driver's license from the state. Some agencies, such as Metro, pay new hires to take this training.
