Pay: The average annual salary of an accountant in the Seattle area is $53,300, with most making from $46,600 to $59,500 a year, according to PayScale, a Seattle company that tracks compensation and benefits.
Demand: Employment is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations in the coming years. An increase in the number of businesses, changing financial laws and regulations, and increased scrutiny of company finances will drive growth. Also, the need to replace accountants and auditors who retire or transfer to other occupations will produce numerous openings.
Need to know: Beyond preparing, analyzing and verifying financial documents, many accountants need a wide range of knowledge and skills. Accountants are broadening services they offer to include budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information-technology consulting and limited legal services.
Computers are changing the nature of the work of most accountants. As a result, a growing number of accountants with extensive computer skills are specializing in correcting problems with software or in developing software to meet unique data-management and analytical needs. Accountants also are beginning to perform more technical duties, such as implementing, controlling and auditing systems and networks, developing technology plans and analyzing and devising budgets.
Most accountant positions require at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Some employers want a master's degree.
