What This Job Pays: archivist

Pay: The average pay of an archivist in the Seattle area is $19.36 an hour, with most making from $16.14 to $21.87 an hour, according to PayScale, a Seattle company that tracks compensation and benefits.

Demand: Employment of archivists is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations in the coming years. Jobs are expected to grow as organizations emphasize establishing archives and organizing records and information and as public interest in science, art, history and technology increases. There is healthy support for and interest in museums, which will generate demand for archivists. However, cultural institutions can be subject to periods of budget tightening, reducing demand for these workers.

Need to know: Archivists collect, organize and maintain control over a wide range of information deemed important enough for permanent safekeeping. This information takes many forms: photographs, films, video and sound recordings, computer tapes and video and optical disks, as well as more traditional paper records, letters and documents. Graduates with highly specialized training, such as master's degrees in both library science and history, with a concentration in archives or records management and extensive computer skills, should have the best opportunities.
