Townhomes offer urban amenities, added living space

BELLEVUE — Washington Square has taken a prominent place on the city's skyline, and many people have bought one of the community's 377 condominiums, seeking the high-rise lifestyle it offers.
But the condo option is not for all homebuyers.
"As empty nesters, we were looking for an opportunity to downsize and upscale at the same time," says Scott Ferguson, a retired Microsoft employee from Woodinville, who purchased one of the 26 townhomes that are also among the living options at Washington Square. "We thought we might give urban life a try for the first time in our lives."
For Ferguson, maintaining the space and privacy of a traditional suburban home was a must — a challenge for homebuyers eager to move to a densely populated, vertically expanding neighborhood such as downtown Bellevue.
Washington Square is the only luxury high-rise project in downtown Bellevue to offer multilevel, street-entrance townhomes with the amenities and convenience of a condominium tower. Each townhome includes a private two-car garage with extra storage, a personal garage-to-residence elevator and garden patios for added outdoor living space.
"After seeing [the private garages and personal elevators] and the quality of the townhomes, we knew where we would end up," says Ferguson's agent, Mike Sampson, of John L. Scott Bellevue.
Townhomes range in size from 1,700 to more than 3,400 square feet. They include private second-story balconies, Viking kitchen appliances, walk-in master closets and gas fireplaces.
"Townhomes at Washington Square offer a unique opportunity for those who want to downsize from a large single-family home," says Mike Nielson, chief operating officer of Washington Square. "The extra square footage of a townhome makes for a nice transition."
Ferguson says keeping the design and individuality of a traditional home while gaining the convenience and easy upkeep of condo living made for an appealing option.
"Things like [Washington Square's] common amenities and doing away with yard maintenance were also positive factors," he says.
At Washington Square, condo and townhome owners have access to the exclusive resident fitness center, spa, massage and stretching rooms, hotel-style lobbies and 24-hour concierge or night doorman services. Building and ground maintenance are taken care of by the community's homeowners' association.
Located in the heart of downtown Bellevue, Washington Square is a couple of blocks away from destinations such as Bellevue Square, Lincoln Square, the Bellevue Arts Museum, several corporate headquarters and Microsoft offices.
"Townhome living provides the conveniences and amenities of living in a downtown environment surrounded by shops and restaurants," says Doug Sonnenberg, a sales executive at Washington Square. "Bellevue has highly rated schools and is recognized regionally as a safe environment, which makes it very appealing to families."
"We looked at many different condo options in and around Bellevue," Ferguson says. "The townhomes at Washington Square offered us the unique combination of the spacious feel of a traditional home with the location and ambience that is intimately Bellevue."
Washington Square is nearly 70 percent sold. The inventory includes many of the most-sought-after floor plans among the townhomes, including three-bedroom floor plans.
