MOUNT VERNON — Big Fir South, a community of homes for residents ages 55 or older, celebrates its grand opening this weekend.

"The model is done, and we are ready for everyone to come and tour this unique home," says Rebecca Ungar, the community sales manager. "The early response to our community has been great — over 50 percent of the homes have already sold."

Big Fir South is bordered by Maddox Creek and a protected natural area, which includes walking paths. The community features views of nearby Little Mountain.

The single-level and master-on-the-main-floor homes include fully maintained yards in the front and back. Prices range from the high $200,000s to the mid-$400,000s.

"These homes offer the perfect solution for anyone looking for their 'forever home,' " Ungar says. "They are constructed with extra-wide doorways and hallways [and include] a finished and insulated two-car garage with a pull-down ladder and attic storage space above."

The model home that opens this weekend features the 1,920-square-foot Cultus floor plan. The single-level Craftsman-style home has three bedrooms and two baths. The open layout features formal living and dining rooms, as well as a family room with vaulted ceilings and a stone fireplace.

The kitchen includes slab granite countertops, tile backsplashes and solid-wood cabinetry. The master suite has a five-piece bath and walk-in closet.

The homes at Big Fir South were built by Landed Gentry Homes and Communities, a family-owned company that has been building homes for more than 30 years. Features include hardwood flooring and 3-foot-wide doors.

"Our buyers are accustomed to owning a quality home," says Kendra Gentry-Decker, the vice president of Landed Gentry Homes and Communities. "When it comes to downsizing, they are looking to reduce burdensome maintenance and square footage, not quality.

"We offer a high-quality home with the attention to detail they have become comfortable with and the low maintenance they desire."

Big Fir South is located east of the Anderson Road exit off Interstate 5. Grocery stores and medical facilities are less than a mile away.
