Taking the day off for the inauguration?

Consult your media outlet of choice this week and you'll see or hear the words "history being made" no less than 500 times. Yet unless workers took today off as a vacation day or personal day, most will be toiling away while Obama gets sworn in as president at 9 a.m. Pacific today.

Curious about what others planned to do to commemorate the morning, I began poking around last night. The Stranger offers a pretty hefty list of Seattle area theaters, bookstores, bars, and community centers opening their doors and switching on their TVs for the morning's inaugural events, though I've had a tough time finding anyone whose employer gave them the morning off.

Instead, "Watch at my desk" has been the resounding response. In fact, more than 1.2 million Facebook users are "attending" the inauguration virtually, thanks to CNN.com. But if you want to support your local media from your desk (please do!), you can watch the event streamed live (and participate in a live blog) via the Seattle Times.

A few other responses of note from my Facebook network:

From an Expedia employee: "The company is bringing in a huge TV and letting us watch on the company clock."

From a school teacher: "I'll be watching in class with my students."

From a high-tech employee with a flexible schedule: "I realized that this really is a big, big deal and am staying home to watch with my husband."
