Looking for an all-new mid-size SUV in 2008? Here's a brief overview of all the mid-size SUVs that have been redesigned or are brand-new models to the market in 2008. Some of the highlights include the redesigned Toyota Highlander and the brand-new Ford Taurus X.
Buick Enclave
2008 Buick Enclave
New for 2008
List prices: $32,055-$36,255
The Buick Enclave crowns GM's newest batch of crossover SUVs, a group that also includes the Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia. The Enclave has some features not seen on the Outlook or Acadia, though, like a power-adjustable steering wheel, rear backup camera and additional noise insulation. Like its siblings, the Enclave offers three rows of seats standard. Trim levels include the base CX and uplevel CXL.
The crossovers signal a dramatic departure from GM's current truck-based offerings, including the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. The Outlook, Acadia and Enclave are car-based, offering modern six-speed automatic transmissions and 3.6-liter V-6 engines that help them achieve substantially better gas mileage.
While the Outlook and Acadia compete with garden-variety Hondas and Toyotas, Buick says the Enclave will go head to head with the Volvo XC90 and Acura MDX, among others.
2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Redesigned for 2008
List prices: $28,520-$43,440
The Jeep Grand Cherokee midsize SUV gets an update for the 2008 model year that includes a more powerful 4.7-liter V-8 engine and newly available entertainment options, including a MyGIG navigation and entertainment system and Sirius Backseat TV.
The Grand Cherokee is currently one of the few SUVs with an available diesel engine, but more automakers are expected to introduce diesels for their SUVs in the coming years.
2008 Nissan Armada
Nissan Armada
Redesigned for 2008
List prices: $35,250-$44,550
The Armada is Nissan's largest SUV, and the automaker has updated it for the 2008 model year with some minor exterior styling changes and a more luxurious cabin. The Armada is still powered by a 5.6-liter V-8 engine and has room for up to eight.
2008 Subaru Tribeca
Subaru Tribeca
Redesigned for 2008
List prices: $29,995-$33,595
Critics of Subaru's polarizing three-point grille can celebrate. After just two years on the market, the controversial element has been pulled from the 2008 Tribeca — no longer the B9 Tribeca — SUV and Impreza compact car, the two models it primarily affected (or afflicted, depending on your opinion).
The Tribeca has a number of other changes, not the least of which is its name, dropping the B9 designation it had in 2006 and 2007. Others include a larger engine, new rear styling and revised seat controls.
As before, the SUV comes with standard all-wheel drive. It can seat five in standard configuration or seven with an optional third row.
2008 Toyota Highlander
Toyota Highlander
Redesigned for 2008
List prices: $27,300-$34,150
The second-generation 2008 Highlander is larger and more powerful than before, which gives the midsize SUV more breathing room between it and the automaker's recently enlarged RAV4 compact SUV. The gas-powered Highlander gets a new 3.5-liter V-6; a redesigned gas/electric Highlander Hybrid is also offered.
Five- and seven-seat models are available, and Base, Sport and Limited trims are offered. Competitors include the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-9.
Toyota Sequoia
Redesigned for 2008
List prices: Starting at $34,150
The 2008 Sequoia has been completely redesigned for 2008 to look more like its truck counterpart, the Tundra. The new Sequoia is larger than its predecessor and includes optional third-row seats. Three trim lines are offered, the previously featured SR5 and Limited, and the new Platinum.
2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2
Volkswagen Touareg 2
Redesigned for 2008
List prices: $39,320-$68,320
Volkswagen restyled the five-seat Touareg for 2008, dubbing the new edition Touareg 2. Don't be fooled — this is hardly the portly SUV's second coming. It's more of a touch-up on the first one, with new front and rear styling and a few extra safety features.
The engines remain essentially the same, with the choice of a 280-hp V-6, 350-hp V-8 or 310-hp diesel V-10. All-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic are standard across the line.
