Millions head out for one last road trip
Cheaper gasoline and an abundance of special holiday deals promises to make it a busy Labor Day weekend at airports and on the highway, AAA said last week. The auto club estimated that 39.1 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between yesterday and Monday -- that's six million fewer travelers than last year, but it's more than the number of travelers who took to the roads from 2004 to 2007.

Smart Fortwo leads roof strength test
The Smart Fortwo has the strongest roof among the 2009 micro- and minicars recently tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Smart earned the highest rating of good, while the Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Mini Cooper and Toyota Yaris earned acceptable ratings. The Chevrolet Aveo was rated marginal. Vehicles rated good must have roofs that are more than twice as strong as the current minimum federal safety standard requires. A strong roof helps protect occupants in rollover crashes.
